Herban Allies is a 9,000 square foot urban homestead located in the Junior College neighborhood in Santa Rosa. We apply permaculture principles and our landscape is low water, edible and aromatic, with ample wildlife habitat. We re-use and recycle whenever possible; for example, our old concrete sidewalk was cut into pavers and transformed into an urbanite pathway leading to the backyard. We conserve water via a drip irrigation system, selecting mainly native and/or drought tolerant plants and re-use water via a grey water laundry to landscape irrigation system installed by Daily Acts.

With the help of a landscape architect, we designed the entire front landscape and continue to work on the large back garden. We are constantly transforming this land into an urban “herban” homestead with the goal of connecting modern life and nature. We are a pesticide free zone.

The small front yard, once covered with invasive Bermuda grass, is now a drought tolerant landscape of native and aromatic plants that provide food and habitat. This landscape was installed in 2017.

The large, 7,000 square foot, back garden is a place to grow food and medicinal plants that we preserve in the form of essential oils, hydrosols, tinctures, teas, infused oils and honeys, and other herbal medicines for the community. We enjoy offering community classes on nutrition and herbal medicine, including how to select, cultivate, harvest and process individualized herbal medicine for your garden. This area of the property is still in the design phase with the goal of completing installation in 2018.

A printable plant list is available to download for this garden.
