Rain Garden Installation: Presentation and Workshop

May. 13, 2023 | 9:00 am - 2:00 pm

Town of Windsor + Daily Acts

Learn how to catch rainwater in your landscape by installing a rain garden!

By working with rainwater to rehydrate our landscapes, we can build our communities’ resilience to the effects of climate change, including drought, flooding and fire. Rain gardens are one simple but effective tool for building soil health and rehydrating landscapes. Join us at a residence* in Windsor for an informational presentation on rain gardens followed by an opportunity to get the hands-on experience of creating and planting a rain garden!

For this installation, we’ll be:

Learning all about rain gardens: best practices, design considerations, and the many benefits they offer
Excavating the existing lawn to a depth of 1.5ft, moving compost, leveling the rain garden and creating inflow/overflow points
Planting Zone 1 of the rain garden with native species that best tolerate standing water for a few days at a time

We will need as many hands as possible to get this rain garden dug, leveled, mulched and planted — but if for any reason you are unable to participate in the physical labor, you are welcome to join us for the presentation and observe the installation.

Our host was chosen through an application process in late 2022. While we will only be planting Zone 1 during the workshop, our host will complete the planting of the rest of the rain garden and other water-wise, regenerative strategies, including but not limited to: sheet mulching and drip irrigation. We hope that you’ll leave feeling equipped and inspired to create your own rain garden at home!

*Address of residence will be shared in event registration confirmation email
