The Pocket Park Food Forest was initially installed in September 2009 by Daily Acts in partnership with the City of Cotati as an educational model landscape site to highlight water conservation practices and the “Cash For Grass” rebate program. The transformation of this former lawn into a beautiful, water-wise garden has saved at least 60,000 gallons of water annually, eliminating the need for pesticides, herbicides, and mower fuel required to maintain turf and preventing run off into the adjacent Cotati creek. This diverse garden benefits from the soil building and moisture holding technique of sheet mulching, which in combination with a drip irrigation system keeps all plants watered appropriately with no waste. Thanks to a smart ecological design by Patrick Picard of Equinox Landscape, the California natives, edibles, insectaries and medicinal plants mingle harmoniously in this drought tolerant yet rather lush landscape.
Now in its sixth year of growing, the park is under-going a series of upgrades to make sure it can accommodate the needs of the community it serves. A new pathway designed to be ADA compliant will invite visitors in to a gathering area with benches nestled between the fruit trees. Cozy walking paths wander closely to different edibles, medicinals and other herbs making them easy to harvest. The garden that was once a monoculture of lawn, continues to provide community members with a bountiful harvest of raspberries, figs, persimmons, apples, pomegranates, herbs, artichokes, blueberries, and more each year. Be sure to stop by to witness the diversity in bloom at this regular-sized residential lot.
